Shturmanskie watch

Navigator's watch for flight crews

On display
The watch was not standard issue in the ordinary sense: it was presented at graduation as part of flight equipment. The movement is built for shock and temperature swings, with a central seconds hand for timing short intervals in flight. An example of this model was on Yuri Gagarin's wrist on 12 April 1961; the watch was the only instrument working with him throughout the flight independently of onboard systems. Simple mechanics proved exactly as reliable in space as on the ground. On display is the watch in a case with a magnifier and a production record.
