On display
Until 1959 the far side of the Moon was completely unknown. Luna-3 photographed it on film, developed it on board and transmitted the image over a television channel — the quality was poor but sufficient to map the main features.
The names of the new objects were approved by the International Astronomical Union; the Sea of Moscow and the crater Tsiolkovsky first appeared on this globe. The edition was a visible summary of the first stage of lunar exploration.
